Marfa’s Beirut // Getting some very local inspiration

Spent a wonderful afternoon in one of the few local galleries in Beirut that focus on contemporary art – Marfa’s Beirut (more info on the exhibition below):

Ahmad Ghossein
There Is No Right Or Wrong Here – الأرض لـمَن يُحرّرها

Starting from a piece of land without a trace, Ahmad Ghossein’s project aims to question the conceptions of space, land, and its thickness – or the limits of its depths before it can be considered ‘underground’ in South Lebanon. This part of the country has no official cadastral record and no information about it exists in the Directorate of Land Registration and Cadasters in Lebanon. Cadastral surveys were considered one of the foundational tools for ‘modernizing’ a country, registering and classifying the demarcations between public and private property, and did not only imply enabling the planning and implementation of modern infrastructure, but also organizing private property, and thus introducing a new “objective” or “scientific” ordering of social, economic and political relations. Ahmad Ghossein starts from a personal experience and looks into the implications of such missing data, investigating the states’ practices and processes in relation to cartography, geodesy, hypsometry, and other related sciences.

#023 // Fear & Hope

‘Fear & Hope’ is part of the # Not Forgotten series, focused on the destiny of the weakest in the context of hegemonial power play.

It is based on my support for the Lobilat charity (www.lobilat.com), that aims to give back comfort and hope to Syrian refugee kids that need to live in Lebanese refugee camps – by providing them with ‚fluffy soulmates‘.

Donors can name their fluffies after people they care for, producing tripple happiness – for the refugee kid, the person after whom it is named and themselves.

Gallery Weekend 2017 // Some Highlights // Jonas Burgert

One of the key highlights of this year’s Gallery Weekend was certainly Jonas Burgert’s 22m painting at Blain/Southern, together with a big collection of other paintings of his.

I especially love the subtle spirituality you can feel in all of his paintings – a modern, 21-century ‘Alice in Wonderland’ feel …

Gallery Weekend 2017 // Some Highlights // Michael Laube

Last week I was very busy visiting a couple of museums, the ‘TheHaus’ art project and, obviously, ‘Gallery Weekend Berlin’. As with all big events like ‘Gallery Weekend’ the quality of exhibitions varies a lot. So here are some of my highlights…

Michael Laube – exhibited @ Kuckei + Kuckei – has focused his art on ‘acryl on acrylic’, creating wonderfully colorful pieces that will never bore you to watch a thousand’s time as you will always discover a new facet or reflection of light.
